Italian-American Soprano Jessica Rose Cambio made her professional debut singing Mimì in scenes from Puccini's La Bohéme with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall, and she recently made her European debut in the role in Como, Brescia, Pavia, and Cremona, Italy, with both Mirella Freni and Renata Scotto in the audience, after having been selected as a 1st place winner in the 60° Concorso Associazione Lirica e Concertistica Italiana (As.Li.Co). Ms. Cambio also most recently sang the role of Violetta in Verdi's La Traviata with the Pine Mountain Music Festival and the title role in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor with both the New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera and as a Resident Artist with the Academy of Vocal Arts. She also sang Magda in Puccini's La Rondine and the cover of Violetta with the International Vocal Arts Institute (IVAI), under the direction of Joan Dornemann, Assistant Conductor and Prompter at the Metropolitan Opera, in Tel Aviv, Israel where she was awarded the prestigious Silverman Prize for Continuing Studies. She then went on to sing in a concert in honor of the 70th Birthday Celebration of Elena Obratszova in St. Petersburg, Russia with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic. She recently joined the Professional Development Studies program at Mannes College the New School for Music in New York City, and this Fall she will continue on to Spain to compete in the International Vocal Competitions of Monserrat Caballe and Teresa Berganza.
A regular on the competition circuit, Ms. Cambio was just recently awarded 1st prize in both the Licia Albanese Puccini Foundation Competition and the Giulio Gari Foundation Competition and was selected as a National Semi-Finalist in the 2009 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions after having been awarded 1st place in both the Philadelphia Distric and the Middle Atlantic Region. She was also the 1st place winner in the Gerda Lissner International Vocal Competition, the Florida Suncoast Opera Guild Vocal Competition, and the Queens Opera Association Vocal Competition; 2nd place winner in the New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera Vocal Competition and the 12°Festival Sanremo Musica Classic Concorso Internazionale per Giovani Cantanti Lirici del Mondo at the Teatro di Casinò in Sanremo, Italy; 3rd place winner in the Mario Lanza Institute Vocal Competition and the Palm Springs Opera Guild Competition; Critic's prize winner offered by Opera Actual Barcelona in the Musica Riva Festival Concorso Internazionale per Giovani Cantanti Lirici Riccardo Zandonai; a double award winner in the Liederkranz Foundation Competition; and an encouragement award winner in the George London Foundation Competition, the Fort Worth Opera McCammon Voice Competition, and the Opera Index Vocal Competition, among other prizes. She was also selected as a finalist in the Francisco Viñas International Singing Competition in Barcelona, Spain, the Annamaria Saritelli-DiPanni Bel Canto Vocal Scholarship Foundation, the National Opera Association, the Connecticut Opera Guild, the Competizione dell'Opera International Singing Contest in Dresden, Germany and Placido Domingo's Operalia in Quebec, Canada.
Ms. Cambio has performed in concert and opera in Europe, Canada, Israel, Russia, and the United States. Her operatic roles, in addition to the aforementioned, in both scenes and full performances include Elvira in I Puritani, Giulietta in I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Liù in Turandot, Musetta in La Bohéme, Marguerite in Faust, Micaëla in Carmen, Suzel in L'amico Fritz, Susanna and Countess in Le nozze di Figaro, and Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte. Ms. Cambio has had the privilege of performing in several Masterclasses for artists such as Licia Albanese, Tito Capobianco, Ira Siff, and Carol Vaness, and she has had the opportunity to collaborate with many esteemed directors, coaches, composers, and conductors including Joan Dornemann, Ken Cazan, Asher Fisch, and Ken Noda. Voice teachers include Maria Spacagna, Elizabeth Hynes, Renata Scotto, Bill Schuman, and currently Ruth Falcon. She also had the great honor of singing for Maestro James Levine in 2007.
In addition to her time with IVAI, she was also a scholarship participant in the V.O.I.C.Experience! with Sherrill Milnes and Friends in Walt Disney World, Florida; she sang the role of Chocholka the Hen in Janacek’s The Cunning Little Vixen with the Aspen Opera Theatre Center; and she was one of 14 participants in the Renata Scotto Opera Academy in White Plains, NY where she studied the roles of Gilda in Rigoletto and Amina in La Sonnnambula. By the invitation of the famous soprano, she also attended the Renata Scotto Opera Studio at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Italy where she was awarded the Laurel Schwartz Vocal Achievement Award for Continuing Studies and studied the roles of Elvira, Violetta, Lucia, Liù, and Adina.
Ms. Cambio spent a year as a Resident Artist at the prestigious Academy of Vocal Arts, and she completed her Master of Music at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music where she sang Ilia in Mozart's Idomeneo with the USC Thornton Opera. There, she was also awarded a teaching fellowship for the Vocal Arts Department. She graduated from Rhode Island College, receiving her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance where she was the featured soprano soloist with the RIC Chorus for the world premiere of Michael Remson’s Celebration!, a work written for her in honor of the Sesquicentennial Anniversary of the school. She will return to Providence this December to perform with the RIC Wind Ensemble.
